Neutering

We routinely perform surgical and chemical neutering including laparoscopic bitch speys. Female dogs can be neutered before their first season from 6 months of age or alternatively 3 months after a season. Early neutering of female dogs reduces the risk of mammary tumours and removes the risk of developing pyometra later in life.

For routine surgical castration, we recommend waiting for your dog to be fully grown and matured so we generally wait until your dog is at least a year old to prevent growth plate and behavioural problems.

Chemical neutering for male dogs involves implanting a small chip into the scruff of the neck. From 6 weeks following the implant, your dog will effectively be chemically castrated for either 6 or 12 months depending on the chip used.

We neuter cats from 5 months old. Cat castration is a very quick procedure that requires no stitches. Female cats are generally spayed through a small incision in their left flank.

Other services

Dental Care

Dental Care

Dental health is often an overlooked issue in dog and cats. It is estimated that 85% of dogs and cats over the age of three years of age will have some degree of dental disease. Here at The Guildford Vet, we believe helping owners understand the impact dental health can have on your pet’s overall health is important. We can where necessary perform dental scale and polish procedures in house, and carry out any necessary tooth extractions to help restore your pet’s dental health.

Microchipping

Microchipping

Since 6th April 2016, it is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped in England and since June 2024, cats are now legally required to be microchipped as well. We strongly advise all pets be microchipped, even those that are kept indoors. If your pet gets lost or sadly taken without a microchip, it is very unlikely they will be found and returned to you safely.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations

Vaccines have long been an important part of preventative medicine, both in humans and in pets. By giving a pet a controlled amount of vaccine, the pet’s immune system can prepare itself and be ready for the day if and when the real disease arrives to infect them.
